Experience excellent views of Helgeland’s highlights from this easily accessible peak
- Destination: Helgeland
- Season: April-October
- Difficulty: Medium
- Distance: 4.8 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 290 meters
- Duration: 1-2 hours
Åkvikfjellet is a good choice if you wish to experience excellent views without too much effort. It’s situated on Dønna, an island that has everything from inland nature with woods, wetlands, and mountains to coastal nature with naked islets and reefs.
From its 287-meter high peak, you can see towards surrounding islands such as Herøy, Lovund, and Alstenøya with the famous Seven Sisters. Åkvikfjellet is thus a good alternative to the more time-consuming and demanding hike to Dønnamannen.
As this trail isn’t too long, it’s perfect on a bright summer’s evening.
Getting to Dønna
Dønna is just a 25-minute ferry ride away from Sandnessjøen. Check departure times on Entur (Sandnessjøen ferjekai, Alstadhaug to Bjørn kai, Dønna).
Another possibility is to take the ferry from Søvik in Alstadhaug to Silvalen on Herøy. This takes about 30-40 minutes. Check departure times on Entur (Søvik ferjekai, Alstadhaug to Herøy ferjekai, Herøy). The drive through the coastal landscape on narrow bridges from Herøy to Dønna makes for an unforgettable experience and is a popular route among cycle tourists.
There’s an express boat service operating on the route Sandnessjøen - Bjørn (Dønna) - Nesna. It takes about 15 minutes from Sandnessjøen to Dønna. Check departure times on Entur (Sandnessjøen hurtigbåtkai, Alstadhaug to Bjørn kai, Dønna to Nesna kai, Nesna).
Getting to the trailhead
If you’re coming from Bjørn ferry terminal in the north, take Road 828 southwards. You’ll reach the parking lot after driving by Åkvikbukta, a long bay. The parking lot is close to Åkvik farm.
If you’re coming from Silvalen on Herøy, take Road 828 northwards to Dønna. The parking lot is about 1 kilometer north of the bridge between Herøy and Dønna.
The start of the trail is not well marked. Follow the gravel road from the parking lot a few hundred meters towards the southwest. When the road splits in two, keep to the left. 200 meters further on, the trail is signposted.
From here, follow the red markings all the way to the top. The trail is well-trodden and easy to follow. Enjoy the striking views of the surrounding islands as you ascend the top. Just before you reach the peak, you’ll see a monument shaped like a sheet of music.
Descend along the same trail.
