About Vardeberget

Vardeberget was originally one of many places in the Valdres region where a fire would be lit as a beacon signaling incoming intruders. Today most hikers go up there for a great view of Aurdal and the valley.

The hike goes partly through the forest and partly through farmland with old wooden buildings.

Getting there

Exit road E16 in Aurdal right by the church towards Danebu and Valdres Alpine ski slopes. After 800 meters you get to the first sharp right turn and a small gravel road taking off on your left-hand side. Park along this gravel road and find the signed trailhead on the other side of a small creek.

Trail description

Start hiking up through the forest right by the little creek. The trail is fairly steep here as you climb up from 550 meters to 700 meters above sea level. The trail levels out and you reach the farming area on the other side of the forest.

Follow the road towards Hjellebråten and go through the gate straight after the old tree building on your right-hand side. Continue on for about 600 meters climbing up through the forest. Take a left at the trail junction towards Vardeberget and follow the trail for another 200 meters.

If you are interested in local food and beer then go by Noraker Gard and Små Vesen before or after the hike. Noraker Gard is known for its production of fermented fish which they sell in the farm shop. Små Vesen sells its excellent locally produced beer.

Where to stay

Not far from the trailhead, you will find the historic Danebu Kongsgård hotel.
