This can be a short trip where you get to enjoy pleasant mountain farms, wild nature and high mountain scenery in a few hours time. You can obviously spend some more time and see more mountains.
From Slettefjellvegen you take off after 1.5 km into Herredalen and continue on the road to the end. On both sides there are abandoned mountain farms, which are nowadays used as cottages.
The marked trail goes up steeply 300 meters on a good path in moraine ground to Rysntjednet located 1400 meters above sea level. This is a great place. You can end your hike here, or you can find your way on your own to an extended trip. If you go to the west on the T-marked trail towards Tomashellaren you will encounter the summer pasture road Sandalen-Kvithaug. If you are in the mood for a round-trip, the alternative is to take this mountain farm road south of Høgegga but to take off from this and go along Geitskinntjednet. Go on the north side of the east end of the pond, and then some. Then turn to the northeast, over a small ridge. From there you can look straight down at Herredalen, the parking lot and cars. This route goes through wildlife corridors, but it is clear and easy to see where to go.
