Nonstinden Hiking Trail
Hike high above Unstad Beach
- Destination: Lofoten
- Season: April-October
- Difficulty: Medium
- Distance: 5 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 500 meters
- Duration: 2-3 hours
The surfing paradise of Unstad Beach is situated between the green hills and mighty peaks of the Lofoten Islands.
The trek to Nonstinden, a high point on the ridge behind the beach, provides views of the pretty beach and valley. The trail is suitable for most people and not very steep or exposed. Thrill seekers can follow the ridge a little closer to the edge.
The turnoff to Unstad is on Route E10 between Svolvær and Leknes, about 11 kilometres north of Leknes.
Follow this road, Steinfjordveien, and then continue on Saupstadveien for about 5 minutes. Drive through the Unstad tunnel and into Unstad.
When you reach a T-intersection, turn left. Park in the parking lot on the right-hand side or continue driving towards the chapel and park in one of the spaces along the road.
Walk along the gravel road a few hundred meters past the white chapel. Look for a trail on the left-hand side that leads up to Utdalsvatnet Lake.
Once you reach the corner of the lake follow the trail heading up to the ridge to the left. Parts of the trail here can be a little difficult if it is wet and slippery. Take your time and watch your step.
The trail then continues along the ridge and you can see some of the best views of the hike. You can choose to walk closer to the edge or safely along the flat plateau up to Nonstinden, the highest point.
After your hike enjoy a refreshing dip in the sea or Utdalsvatnet Lake. Cold and hot drinks and delicious pastries are available at Unstad Arctic Surf a couple of hundred meters from the beach.
Where to stay
Camping is allowed in both camper vans and tents between the beach and the path towards the mountain, and costs 200 NOK. Alternatively you can stay at Unstad Arctic Surf just by the beach.
