“Javn” means “even” in Norwegian, and it’s a fitting description of the ascent to Javneberget. The forest trail taking you to the top is easy-going and perfect for a family outing. Although Javneberget is modest compared to other peaks in the area, the mountain awards expansive views of Beitostølen and the north of Valdres.
The trail runs partly through marshlands, so be sure to wear waterproof footwear.
From Fagernes, follow the signs to Road 51 towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Drive on Road 51 for about 31 kilometers until you reach Skammerstein.
Take Vinstervegen to the right. Continue past the toll gate (the fee is about NOK 50) for about 300-400 meters until you reach some containers on the left-hand side of the road. Here you can park your car.
BusSkammestein. Take Vinstervegen to the right, and walk some 300-400 meters until you reach the parking for Javneberget by the containers.
From the parking, continue some 400 meters northwards along the road and take the logging road going westwards on the right-hand side of the road. After a couple of hundred meters, the road turns into a trail. Continue on the trail for about a hundred meters, until you reach a small cairn where you take to the right. The trail to Javneberget is unmarked but easy to spot in the terrain. If you reach a stream without having turned right, you’ve hiked too far.
Continue on the unmarked trail in a gradual ascent to the top. Before you reach the top, you’ll pass the treeline - just in time to get a nice view of Beitostølen.
Descend along the same trail.
