Bjørnskinntinden Hiking Trail
Enjoy a panoramic view of Andøya
- Season: April-August
- Difficulty: Medium
- Distance: 4.5 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 610 meters
- Duration: 2-3 hours
Bjørnskinntinden is the first mountain that greets you as travel on to Andøya Island from Hinnøya. With the flat landscape at its base it can look quite daunting, but a clear albeit steep trail leads to the top 635 meters above the sea.
From the top of Bjørnskinntinden are views around the southern part of Andøya. The vista back towards Risøyhamn is particularly beautiful on a clear summer’s day.
As the trail nears the summit it follows an exposed ridge. Keep some distance from the edge, especially if the terrain is wet and slippery.
The trailhead is located along Road 974, part of Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya.
Look for a turnoff with a parking lot about 1 kilometer west of Bjørnskinn village. Parking is free.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow.
Follow the dirt road from the parking lot for about 200 meters. From there, follow the trail to the right through the trees and up the mountainside.
The trail is not very steep to begin with, but as you past the treeline it will become increasingly steeper.
Once you meet the ridge, continue north along the ridge. Keep a distance from the edge which has a very steep drop.
The summit features enough space to rest, have a meal, and enjoy the views over Andøya and the surrounding islands.
Bring water as there aren’t any water sources on the trail.
