While Rundemellen (1,345 meters above sea level) is a well-known Valdres landmark, it’s “little brother” Skarvemellen (1,267 m.a.s.l.) is lesser known but easier to access. Both mountains are part of the Melladn Mountain range, which also includes Rabalsmellen (1,111 m.a.s.l.) and Kalvemellen (1,136 m.a.s.l.).Despite the lack of markings, the trail to Skarvemellen is easy to spot in the terrain. There are several nice viewpoints along the trail where you can take a break and enjoy stunning views including Bitihorn and the Gjende Alps.
From Fagernes, follow the signs to Road 51 towards Vågå/Beitostølen. Drive on Road 51 for about 11 kilometers, and exit to the right towards Melbybråten.
Continue some 200 meters before turning to the right on Køllstadvegen. Drive straight ahead for some 7 kilometers, passing the toll station, in the direction of Juvike, Lie and Turrsjøen Lake. The toll fee is about NOK 50. Continue some 6 kilometers, reaching a sharp left-hand turn on the top of a hill. Park your car on the right-hand side of the road, before you reach the cattle guard.
The closest stop, Ygnebrue, is about 7 kilometers from the trailhead, so you’ll need to bring a bike, take a cab or hitch a ride.
From the parking, follow the trail going up on the opposite side of the road. The trail leads you past some cabins and into the woods. Although the trail isn’t well-marked, it’s easy to spot as it winds its way up the wooded hillside.
The trail turns to the right before passing the treeline. It continues steeply up the hillside, before splitting in two. Take the path to the left, which will take you even further up the mountainside before flattening out. Follow the ridge of Skarvemellen, in a gradual ascent for about 1 kilometer until you reach the peak. Enjoy the far-reaching views from the top.
Descend along the same trail, remembering to take to the right when the trail splits, following the same trail as you came from.
