Vardane Hiking Trail
Hike with a great view of Ålesund
- Destination: Sunnmøre
- Season: March-November
- Difficulty: Demanding
- Distance: 11.5 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 730 meters
- Duration: 3-4 hours
Vardane is the highest point of the mountain area Sulafjellet, a very popular place to hike south of Ålesund. This route is used all year round, and during your hike, you will pass the Taustua and Rollonhytta cabins which are both situated just below the treeline. For many local hikers, the cabins are their destination but continuing on to Vardane is strongly recommended for better views of the area.
This hike offers great views from the summit, where you can see Ålesund in all its length to the north. To the south, you can enjoy the views of the Sunnmøre Alps. The trail itself is an easy hike but due to the elevation gain, this hike is rated as difficult.
From Ålesund drive in the direction of Bergen on road E39, and then continue towards Hareid on road 61. When you see the sign to Eikrem, turn right and park along the road.
There is also a bus stop at the parking lot, where bus number 443 (Mauseidvåg-Sulesund) stops, but it has only a couple of departures per day.
From the parking lot, look for all the signs and a big map by the gravel road to find the trailhead. Hike for 500 meters until you reach a small bridge. You're not going over the bridge, but go to the right, and then to the left after the first hill.
An alternate small forest trail will soon be visible to your right. This trail will take you to the same destination, but you can just stay on the trail you're already on.
Further up when the forest gets less dense you reach Taustua, and Rollonhytta follows soon after. This a nice spot to take a break, as you are now halfway along the trail.
After Rollonhytta the wide trail ends, and it becomes more muddy and wet. The trail is visible all the way up to Vardane.
- You can fill up your bottle with water at Taustua. This is where you cross the last small river.
- Free parking
- Rollonhytta is open on Sundays 10-15 (winter) and 10-16 (summer). Here you can buy snacks and something to drink.
- Outhouse toilet at Taustua.
