Visit an old mountain farm between Valldal and Trollstigen
- Destination: Sunnmøre
- Season: May-October
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 1.4 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 180 meters
- Duration: 1-2 hours
The Steindalstølen mountain farm is scenically situated at the entrance to the Steindalen Valley. The clear trail up to the farm is uphill, but not strenuous. Around the farm there are views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.
This is a family-friendly trail. Sheep graze in the area so dogs must be on a leash.
The trailhead to Steindalsstølen is located a short detour from road 63, between Trollstigen and Valldal.
Coming from Valldal, continue 4 kilometers past Gudbrandsjuvet. Look for a small road called Grønningsæter on the right-hand side. Coming from Trollstigen, it’s a 16 kilometer drive to the turn-off.
After turning on to the road, follow it all the way to the end. The last section of the road has a toll of 50 NOK.
From the parking lot, head over the bridge. The wide and well-marked trail runs through the forest by the Steindalselva River. There are small detours along the trail where you can get a better view of the river.
The trail then leads up to a clearing where the farm buildings sit, alongside Litlehornet mountain. Consider heading a bit further along the trail past the buildings to get a view of the farm and the valley you just came up.
