The trip starts behind the hotel and passes by Vinjebue. Right after the bridge over Mjølkedøla ("Mjølke" means "white of clay"), turn left and follow the signs to "Olavsbu/Skogadalsbøen". The path rises steadily along Mjølkedøla to a small plateau on around 1300 meters above sea level. About 60m out on the plateau where two moraines meet in a V-shape, you find a reindeer grave with long fences. The trail continues to Store Mjølkedalsvatnet with a wonderful view towards Mjølkedalsbreen, Mjølkedalspiggen and Storegut which Vinje named. From the northern side of Høgbrothøgdi, the trail goes into hilly terrain, partly through areas with talus, and over one and the other patch of snow until it reaches the self-service cabin Olavsbu (1440 masl) in the heart of Jotunheimen.
