About Mannen

The trail to the summit of Mannen Mountain rewards with wonderful views of the Romsdalen Valley. Mannen sits at the southern end of Trollveggen. The trailhead is located nearby the famous Trollstigen Viewpoint.

Mannen has become quite famous in Norway due to a lot of movement in the mountain and the risk of landslide. Take the trip while it’s still possible!

The hike is demanding, but could be considered relatively mild for a Norwegian mountain hike. The last section of the trail up to the summit is the steepest and toughest part.

Getting there

The trailhead is about 700 meters south of the car park by Trollstigen viewpoint. There are several pockets by the roadside to park in.

Trail description

The trail is generally quite clear, although not always well-marked. Initially the trail is dirt amongst low vegetation, giving way to rocky terrain and scree as it progresses towards Mannen.

From the trailhead at the side of the road, cross the bridge, and follow the river south towards Alnesvatnet Lake. This section of the trail is relatively flat.

The trail passes the lake and begins to ascend, heading up along the left-hand side of the Alnesdalen valley. Along the way there is a large stone called Alnessteinen, which is a good spot for a break.

As you continue, Mannen will stand at the end of the valley, providing a clear target. Around the 3.8 kilometer mark, the trail flattens out again, before gradually ascending towards Børtjønna Lake.

When you reach Børtjønna Lake, stick to the left and continue gradually ascending. At the 6.3 kilometer mark, the trail ascends sharply up to Mannen. The summit is 1,280 meters above sea level and features an iconic pinnacle.

  • Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are recommended due to the rocky terrain

  • Free parking
  • There is running water along parts of the trail, but animals graze in the area, so it’s best to bring plenty with you
