Riven Hiking Trail
Hike an easily accessible peak, suitable as an evening hike
- Destination: Senja
- Season: June-September
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 4.9 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 230 meters
- Duration: 1.5-2.5 hours
With its manageable ascent, Riven might not be the tallest peak, but the view is still priceless. The elevation gain is tackled right from trailhead, and the trail will soon flatten for an easy and enjoyable hike.
Since Riven resides comfortably surrounded by taller peaks, it is sheltered from harsh winds and makes it accessible in less ideal conditions. The hike is suitable for the whole family, but youngsters should be under supervision on the exposed sections of the hike. Hiking boots or shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
The trailhead is located about 6.5 kilometers along Road 277 to Husøy Island on Senja.
Park along the roadside by Langvatnet Lake, midway between the two tunnels, Fjellsendentunnellen and Riventunnellen.
There is limited parking, with room only for about 2 cars at a time.
The hike to Riven is a an easy hike, and achievable in the evening, especially during the midnight sun. The trail begins right next to the road, marked by a wooden sign.
Follow the trail up to the power lines and continue northwest under the lines until the trail turns away from the power lines, and passes over the Riven tunnel.
Continuing on the trail after leaving the power lines, you will soon start the last climb to reach the peak at 389 meters above sea level. At the top you will have Keipen, 938 meters above sea level to your left, and the characteristic Segla, 639 meters above sea level, straight ahead. Breidtinden, Senja's highest mountain, lies to the south.
Descend along the same track.
