About Ruten to Beitostølen
The following route description is one stage of the of Mjølkevegen cycling route. It assumes that participants have arrived by train to Vinstra Station, and have then been picked up and driven 35-kilometers to Ruten Fjellstue in Espedalen.
Very ambitious riders, however, may wish to begin the route from Vinstra, but please be aware that this first section is very hilly and demanding. If you do choose to ride directly from Vinstra you can look forward to a warm welcome by the hosts at Ruten Fjellstuem complete with being served good food and drinks in a cozy and traditional setting. While staying at Ruten, its recommend you visit Elgtårnet, a 12-meter high tower built in 2016, located at Ramstjern. It is also possible to stay overnight here.
From Ruten the cycling route continues towards and over Jotunheimvegen, running between Skåbu and Bygdin. This idyllic stretch has lots of beautiful scenery, active farming, and panoramic views. Keep an eye out for reindeer grazing in the area. After approx. 43 km you will arrive at Haugseter Fjellstue, located by Vinstervann Lake. Take time to enjoy the tranquil surroundings, take a fishing trip, or even enjoy some local mountain dishes. Haugseter also offers some great hiking opportunities.
The last part of this section of the route goes along the Vinstervann Lake where you will most likely meet free grazing cows, sheep, and goats. Here you get close to the mountain farm life, which is an important part of the Valdres culture. After approx. 12 km, you will reach Highway 51 (National Tourist Road Valdresflye) where you will turn left towards Bygdin and Beitostølen. This area is also filled with some spectacular mountains, with many hiking opportunities along the way; such as Synshorn and Bitihorn. Please be aware of slightly heavier traffic along this section. After approx. 14 km, you will arrive at the mountain village of Beitostølen.
The town of Beitostølen has much to offer in terms of dining, shops, and activities.
Where to stay
The Radisson BLU Mountain Resort, Beitostolen is the first hotel you will see on your right-hand-side. Here you can eat and sleep well, as well as enjoy a spa treatment or a swim in the pool.
Haugseter Fjellstue is a cozy lodge right by Vinstervann. The lodge offers different types of apartments or cabins for rent and it also has a restaurant that serves you breakfast and dinner. If you want to take an extra day at Haugseter you could also go fishing on one of their small boats available for rent.
