About Beitostølen to Vaset
This is Mjølkevegen's most spectacular stretch, but also the most demanding. Before embarking on Mjølkevegen's toughest leg relax in the mountain town of Beitostølen. The area offers a wide range of activities, experiences, restaurants, and shopping and Beitostølen is a great base for cycling, hiking and fishing trips.
From The Radisson Blu Mountain Resort, Beitostølen, head towards town then turn right at the junction in the center down towards Beito. At the bottom of the hill turn right again and continue towards Lykkja and Slettefjellvegen. After approx. 10 km the road starts to increase as it wraps around the mountain to the highest point of 1,315 m.a.s.l. Here there are nice wide gravel roads, with stunning views. The descent from the top is rather steep, so it is recommended to cycle carefully, especially in wet conditions. It’s worth stopping on the descent to admire the great views over towards the mountains in Vang, especially when the weather provides clear visibility. Just before you reach the tollbooth, its recommended to make a detour to Sputrefossen waterfall on the right-hand side.
After the tollbooth, turn left and follow Høresvegen, passing the Høre Stave Church, which is well worth a short visit. Continue on Høresvegen until you exit onto Riddarvegen and follow this road down towards Ryfoss. In Ryfoss, there is a grocery store, café and gas service station (YX). In 2018, Mjølkevegen will be signposted on the pedestrian/cycling road which takes you through an underpass, when crossing E16. Alternatively, from the intersection at YX, cycle on E16 for approx 200 meters before exiting towards Syndin. Continue across the bridge and get ready for a 10 km climb to the Syndin plateau and up to Syndinstøga located at about 1,000 m.a.s.l. You have now cycled more than 40 km and completed the most challenging leg of the Mjølkevegen route.
The ride continues on fine gravel roads on Syndin towards Gomobu Mountain Lodge and Vasetstølen Cabins, the endpoint of the journey of the day. Be aware of a few wet sections. Continue on to Murkelie and then you will cycle with Vasetvatnet on your left side, following the signs to Vaset. Vaset is one of the region's best starting points for both short and longer cycling trips, with Stølsvidda and Golsfjellet close by.
There are good amenities near Vaset, with grocery shops, sports shops, and restaurants.
