About Hvaløy and Gåsøy Loop

Kayaking around Hvaløy and Gåsøy is a slightly longer route than other kayaking trips into Færder National Park. This route will give you a better sense of what the area has to offer, and is great for beginners. The loop is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point is Fjærholmen.

Getting there

This adventure starts at Fjærholmen outside of Tønsberg south of the capital city Oslo. Driving from Oslo to Tønsberg takes about 2 hours. As you arrive in Tønsberg look for signs towards Nøtterøy which is an island south of the city. As you go across the bridge from the city of Tønsberg and towards Nøtterøy look for a sign to Fjærholmen and Årøysund and go left here.

Drive for about 2.5 km before you take another left towards Fjærholmen and Føynland. Now it is only 3 km left on smaller roads towards Fjærholmen. Make sure you look for the white signs towards Fjærholmen.

Trail description

Be aware of the boat traffic in this area during the summer season. There is often less traffic in the morning or evening.

From Fjærholmen, paddle east towards the skerry, Steinkloss. Short into this trip, you'll already get an impression of what kayaking in the greater Nøtterøyskjærgården is like, with its abundance of islands and skerries, which is ideal for a kayak trip.

Then kayak to Hvaløy, and then along its shores. There are many great places on Hvaløy and Gåsøy for a break or to pitch a tent. From Gåsøy, continue kayaking south of the island before returning west along Ekornholmen and Steinkloss. Then paddle to Fjærholmen, where you started.

Alternative route
Pitch a tent on Hvaløy or Gåsøy, and then kayak along Kjølholmen and Bjerkøysundet.

At Fjærholmen you can find:

  • A small beach for swimming

  • A campsite with toilets and a small kiosk
  • Toilets
  • Free parking

Where to stay

Fjærholmen is right outside of the city of Tønsberg. You will find lots of overnight options like hotels or Airbnb's in the city.
