About Unstad to Eggum
Unstad is one of Lofoten’s gems, with green meadows and lush mountainsides. Sheep graze along the roadside and at the base of the mountains that shoot up towards the sky.
After driving through the narrow tunnel towards Unstad you are presented with a picture-postcard view. If that isn’t reason enough to journey to this part of Lofoten, Unstad Beach happens to be one of the Norway’s best surf spots.
The beach serves as the starting point for one of the more relaxing hikes in Lofoten, perfect for families or after a few days hiking in the mountains. The quiet trail leads along the coast to Eggum. Along the way, you might meet some of the local population – like grazing sheep or a curious seal.
The turnoff to Unstad is on Route E10 between Svolvær and Leknes, about 11 kilometres north of Leknes.
Follow this road, Steinfjordveien, and then continue on Saupstadveien for about 5 minutes. Drive through the Unstad tunnel and into Unstad.
At the end of the road, after passing Unstad Arctic Surf on the left, turn to the right and follow the road through the boom gate to the parking lot.
A gravel road leads away from Unstad Beach to the northwest along the coast.
After a small bridge, the road becomes a trail which runs along the coastline to Eggum. The trail is uneven and occasionally narrow. It can be a little difficult when it’s wet and slippery.
Return along the same trail.
- When you arrive at Eggum you will see Borga, a radar station built by German forces during the Second World War
- Dogs must be on a leash as there are lots of grazing animals in the area
- This is a great spot to enjoy the midnight sun
