About Hvasser Coastal Trail

Hvasser, the island found on the eastern side of Færder National Park, is a popular summer destination full of hiking trails and popular swimming beaches. Follow this coastal trail on a nice summer day to get a glimpse of everything Hvasser has to offer. 

Getting there

Car

From Oslo, head southwest on E18 for 95 kilometers towards Kristiansand. Take exit 35: Gullikrysset, for Rv 308 toward Tønsberg/Nøtterøy/Tjøme. After passing through Tønsberg, follow the signs to Nøtterøy/Tjøme. 

After 19 kilometers, look for a road on your left called “Ormeletveien”. There will also be a sign pointing towards Hvasser. You will pass through a small village, Ormelet and over a bridge. Follow this road for about 9 kilometers. 

Right before you arrive in Sandøsund, you will pass a church and graveyard on your left. After passing the church, take the first left onto Vestegårdsveien and then after about 200 meters, take your first right onto Lilleskagveien. Follow Lilleskagveien until you pass two tennis courts followed by a parking lot. Park here for the start of the hike and also for the beach. 

Bus

From Oslo, there are hourly train departures to Tønsberg with NSB. From Tønsberg, there is a local bus (route 02) traveling from the Tønsberg bus station to Sandøsund. The buses depart every half hour from early in the morning until late at night. It costs 51 NOK to take the bus to Sandøsund. Tickets can be purchased with cash or card on the bus or you can purchase tickets on the VKT app. 

Trail description

From the parking lot at Lilleskagen, head north along the road for a bit until the trail swings to the east towards Lilleskagen Badeplassen, where you will reach the popular swimming beach. Walk along the beach to the south until you reach the start of Hvasser’s coastal trail.

The trail takes you through forested areas and over some part of rocky rugged terrain. The The trail finishes at Kruke badeplass at Sandøsund. Here you will find a few shops and nice restaurants to enjoy.

The trail overall is quite narrow so it can be difficult go with a stroller. 

Amenities

  • Public restrooms are found both at Lilleskagen beach and Sandøsund. 
  • All of the essential amenities including restaurants and accommodation can be found at Sandøsund.
  • There is a small boat marina located at Sandøsund.
