Veslesmeden is perhaps the most accessible peak in Rondane. The hike to the top is fairly easy as it gradually climbs up from Rondvassbu to the peak itself. Except for at the very top, there are no steep cliffs or dangerous sections along the trail.
From the parking lot, you can choose to walk the 6 kilometers along the road to Rondvassbu or you can also choose to rent a bike and ride into Rondvassbu. The rental bikes are located in the parking lot, and you need to call Rondvassbu at +47 61 23 18 66 to unlock them.
If you have a car, you can drive from Otta to Mysusæter. When you get to Mysusæter, take a left once you reach the small grocery store at the end of the road. Follow this road uphill and through some turns and then take a right to follow the road uphill towards the national park. At the start of this hill, there is a toll booth (15 NOK) where you can pay with a credit card. From the toll booth, you must drive another 4 kilometers until you reach the parking lot at Spranget.
You can also take the bus from Otta to Mysusæter. Usually, there is one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon. Check out the timetables at Opplandstrafikk.no or call them (+47 61 28 90 00) if it is hard to find the correct departure times. Rondane Hotell has a bus going into Spranget each day from Mysusæter at 10:00 am but it probably requires you to stay at the hotel. But call them if you are interested in this transport option and maybe you can pay for the trip.
After walking to Rondvassbu, you will see the trail starting just 50 meters south of the cabin. You need to cross the river at Rondvatnet and follow the trail up the hill on the other side of the river.
The trail continues upwards towards Rondehalsen, a small valley on the west side of Rondevatnet. Going up the valley, you will see that the vegetation eventually gives way to rocky terrain.
Halfway up in the valley, you will see a sign pointing towards Veslesmeden and you need to follow this trail going westwards. The trail gets quite a bit steeper at this point until you reach the plateau followed by the ridge going up to Veslesmeden. The last part of the trail to Veslesmeden is a bit steep so be careful.
- Make sure you fill up your water bottles at or near Rondvassbu. During the first 2-3 kilometers after Rondvassbu, you could be able to fill up your bottle but once you start climbing up the mountain you will not come across other water sources.
Where to stay
Rondvassbu is an excellent place to stay a night or two when you are in this area. Rondvassbu is a staffed cabin by The Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). You can also stay at Rondane Hotell at Mysusæter.
