- Destination: Rondane
- Season: June–September
- Difficulty: Demanding
- Distance: 23.8 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 1,200 meters
- Duration: 6–7 hours
Rondeslottet is Rondane's highest peak and will give you great views of the peaks in Rondane as well as the surrounding area and all the way to Jotunheimen National Park and Forrollhogna National Park.
Starting from Rondvassbu, the rather large cabin serviced by The Norwegian Trekking Association(DNT), the hike up to Rondeslottet goes through an area of very little vegetation. Most of the trail goes through a rocky landscape.
From the parking lot, you can choose to walk the 6 km along the road to Rondvassbu or you can also choose to rent a bike and bike into Rondvassbu. The rental bikes are located in the parking lot, and you need to call Rondvassbu at +47 61 23 18 66 to unlock them.
If you have a car you can drive from Otta and up to Mysusæter. When you get to Mysusæter, take a left once you reach the small grocery store at the end of the road. Follow this road uphill and through some turns and then take a right to follow the road uphill towards the national park. At the start of this hill, there is a toll booth (15 NOK) where you can pay with a credit card. From the toll booth, you must drive another 4 kilometers until you reach the parking lot at Spranget.
You can also take the bus from Otta to Mysusæter. Usually, there is one bus in the morning and one in the afternoon. Check out the timetables at Opplandstrafikk.no or call them(+47 61 28 90 00) if it is hard to find the correct departure times. Rondane Hotell has a bus going into Spranget each day from Mysusæter at 10:00 am but it probably requires you to stay at the hotel. But call them if you are interested in this transport option and maybe you can pay for the trip.
After walking to Rondvassbu you will see the trail starting just 50 meters south of the cabin. The trail climbs up rather quickly until you reach a plateau where it splits into one trail going to Storronden, and one going to Vinjeronden and Rondeslottet. Follow the trail towards the valley between Svartnuten and Storronden and eventually, it starts climbing up to Vinjeronden. The last part up to Vinjeronden is quite steep.
From Vinjeronden you will need to descend about 100 meters before you start climbing up to Rondeslottet again. This climb is a bit difficult as it is fairly steep and there are a lot of large rocks you have to pass. Once you are done climbing up this rocky section of the trail, you can continue up to the peak. The peak itself is a quite large flat area.
The trail up from Rondvassbu to Storronden is very rocky so make sure you have some sturdy boots. On the road to Rondvassbu, you probably want to use some lighter shoes.
It is possible to hike up to Rondeslottet from the other side of the mountain. You need to start from Strømbu along road 27 just north of Atnsjøen. Follow the trail going straight west into the Langglupdalen valley. The distance from Straumbu to the top of Rondeslottet it is about 13 kilometers one way.
- Make sure you fill up your water bottles at or near Rondvassbu. You will find little or no water along the trail.
