About Gjersjøen

Enjoy a peaceful and easy hike around Lake Gjersjøen, which has a depth of more than 60 meters, and is located in the southern part of Greater Oslo Area. You’ll be surrounded by lush nature as well as an abundance of birds that flock to the area. There are ample fishing opportunities, especially for perch and pike. Many locals claim that the lake has the best tasting freshwater fish in the country! Unlike most waterways in Norway, a fishing license is not needed to fish in Lake Gjersjøen.

The lake is very clean, and it is used for supplying drinking water to around 40,000 people in the local municipalities and eventually flows into the Bunnefjorden. Recreational swimming is permitted. In the autumn, take advantage of Norway’s ‘Right to Roam’ law and go mushroom hunting around the lake. During the winter, ski on and around the northern side of the lake. If you plan to head south, make sure you bring your headlamp. If the lake is still frozen during Easter, soak up the sun while ice fishing.

This is a historic area, as there are several Stone Age settlements that were found to have lived near the water. Additionally, in 2005 a 5-meter long boat was discovered that dates back to the 1100s or 1200s.

Getting there

Take E18 southeast of Oslo, then take the exit to Fv152. After about five minutes turn onto Kolbotnveien, which is where your destination is. There is free parking right at the beginning of the track, but it can be quite full during the winter as it is also home to the Ingierkollen Alpine Center.

Public Transportation

If you take public transport, you can take NSB train ‘L2’ or ‘L22’ to Kolbotn. Then walk, 1.2 km. Alternatively, take bus 83 towards ‘Tårnåsen’ and get off at ‘Ingierkollveien’.
