About Frognerseteren to Ullevålseter

Grab your cross-country skis and head out from Frognerseteren to Ullevålseter, one of the best cabins in Nordmarka, the beautiful forest north of Oslo. This trail is a popular one and will be well-prepared throughout the whole winter. Upon arriving to Ullevålseter, enjoy a break, and even a kanel-bolle (cinnamon bun) and coffee, at the cabin before heading back or exploring further in Nordmarka. 

Getting there


This is by far the easiest means of transportation to the start the adventure to Ullevålseter. Take the westbound line 1-Frognerseteren from any of the downtown metro stops. Stay on the metro for about 45 minutes until the very last stop and then walk down the hill to Frognerseteren Cafe. The ski trails start about 100 meters downhill from the cafe. 


From downtown Oslo, drive up to Frognerseteren, past the Holmenkollen Ski Arena, and park near the Frognerseteren Cafe. The ride will take about 30 minutes without traffic. On popular days, the parking near Frognerseteren Cafe can be quite hectic and you may need to park at Tryvann or down the road near Holmenkollen. 

Trail description

The trail from Frognerseteren takes you on a winding, up-and-down trail towards the Ullevålseter cabin out in Nordmarka. The start of the trail is relatively flat with a few sections of downhill. You will go up and down a few times with lots of variety of inclines. The trail is quite wide so there is room for you to ski, but it is a popular track so on weekends and after work, there may be quite a few skiers enjoying the slopes. 

Throughout the trail, you will come to a few crossings. Continue following the signs pointing to Ullevålseter and you will stay on course. The last kilometer has a few larger sections of downhills that take you down to the cabin. 


Ullevålseter is one of the larger cabins in Nordmarka. The cabin is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 9:00 to 21:00 and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 to 17:00 and closed on Mondays. 

During the open hours, Ullevålseter serves warm and cold beverages, waffles, home-baked goods (delicious cinnamon buns!), sandwiches, cakes, and normal kiosk goods.
