About Sukkertoppen

Sukkertoppen is a great starter hike on Senja. From the top there are views of Hamn resort and the surrounding coastline. In the summertime, a hike up to Sukkertoppen is a fantastic way to take in the midnight sun.

There are some steep parts and some exposure towards the top including a section with a chain. The peak is quite small so hike in the morning to avoid a crowd.

The trailhead is easy to access, about 850 meters from Hamn resort with plenty of parking at the resort and by the trailhead.

The last part of the trail can be slippery and difficult in wet conditions, so avoid this hike in poor weather. There is a viewpoint about one kilometer along the trail which is perfect for a shorter hike.

Getting there

Coming from Gryllefjord, park in the parking lot about 850 meters before reaching Hamn resort.

If you are a guest or customer at the resort, you can easily walk from there.

Trail description

The trail is well marked all the way to the top and is easy to follow. The trail is mostly dirt, with some rocky parts. If you’re quite fit you can make it to the top in less than an hour.

The trail is quite lush in the beginning and after one kilometer there is a viewpoint.

Continue along the trail as it travels past Storvatnet lake to the left and then ascends more steeply up to and past Grytvatnet lake.

The trail flattens out a little before ascending steeply, zig-zagging its way to the top. Some sections are exposed, so tread carefully. The steepest section is fitted with a chain to help you climb up and down.

At the top there is a small area to sit, relax, and enjoy the view. Descend along the same trail.

Alternative trail

East of the suggested trailhead, about 1.4 kilometers further along the road, is another starting point. Only roadside parking is available. The two trails meet after about one kilometer.

  • Water is available from the lakes along the trail

  • The nearby resort Hamn i Senja has a good restaurant and toilets

Where to stay

Hamn i Senja, Skagi Senja and Mefjord Brygge all offer hotel rooms as well as apartments with self-catering possibilities. Each has a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a bar.
