Even amongst Norwegians Bråkdalsbelgen in Rondane National Park is not terribly well known. This is mostly because it falls just short of the magic 2,000 meter mark by just 85 meters. But rest assured that this peak is just as fun as its more famous neighbors like Rondslottet and Veslesmeden.
From the top there are views over Rondane including the fascinating Verkilsdalen valley. Jotunheimen National Park can be seen in the distance.
Although it is possible to do this hike from Mysusæter the more common option is to start from Smuksjøseter by Høvringen. This hike also takes you to the Peer Gynt Cabin where you can stop and enjoy a Norwegian waffle.
While driving along the main road E6 in the Gudbrandsdalen valley look for the sign to Høvringen about a 15-minute drive north of Otta. From the main road, there is a six kilometer drive up to a fork in the road just before you reach Høvringen. Bear right at this junction and after two kilometers look for a sign to Smuksjøseter on the right side of the road.
Immediately after turning off to the right you get to the toll booth for driving the road to Smuksjøseter. You need to pay 40 NOK by cash here or if you don’t have cash, pay by credit card when you get to Smuksjøseter. Follow this road for five kilometers until you reach Smuksjøs
Take the train from Oslo or Trondheim to Otta. From Otta there is a local bus going up to Høvringen and Smuksjøseter. Note that this bus only operates during summer. It is also possible to ask Smuksjøseter for private transport all the way from Otta. This costs 240 NOK during summer and 320 NOK in the wintertime.
From Smuksjøster follow the trail along Lake Høvringsvatnet towards the Peer Gynt Cabin. This trail takes you past two more lakes sharing the same name. The first five kilometers to the Peer Gynt Cabin is fairly easy and flat and after reaching the third lake, Bråkdalsbelgen and all the other peaks in Rondane National Park will come into view.
As you near the cabin you will cross the river on a small bridge. Make sure to stop here an enjoy the river tumbling down from the mountains. The cabin is a perfect place for a rest before continuing upwards towards Bråkdalsbelgen.
Follow the trail that starts behind the main cabin and leads along the eastern side of the river. After about one kilometer cross the creek in Tomasholet. This is where the steepest section of the trail begins. Follow the trail along the ridge all the way up to the first plateau at 1,760 meters about sea level. As you hike up, the plateau will look like the top, but you still have 150 meters left to climb.
After crossing the plateau hike the last section up to the peak. The other side of the peak has a steep vertical drop so take care as you near the top.
- There is a small grocery store at Høvringen, but beware that it is not open every day
