A trip to the three small Hårrtjønnin lakes, also known as Harrtjern, is a relaxing hiking adventure for the entire family. Make sure to bring a fishing rod, as there are a lot of trout to fish. The northern lake is said to be the best for fishing, but all lakes have plenty of fish and do not require a fishing license. For an extra “koselig”, cozy, time bring coffee and hot cocoa to make over the open fire.
The terrain to the lakes is rather flat and the shores are surrounded by fine rocks rather than sand. Be aware the lakes are rather popular in the summer months and freeze over during the winter.
Put “Putten Seter” into your GPS, this is where the hike begins. Or drive north of Road E6 and follow the road to the right onto Fv437. At the second main intersection, you will see a sign for Putten Seter and follow the road to the right.
There are many trains and buses to Otta Skysstasjon Station. A bus can then be taken from the station to “Høvringsvegen E6”, the closest stop to Putten Seter. From the bus stop, you will need to walk for about 11 kilometers before reaching Putten Seter.
The hike begins at Putten Seter cabins and is a rocky mountain trail that is flat throughout the entire trip. You will get great views of the surrounding mountains, without gaining elevation. The trip ends at the three lakes of Hårrtjønnin.
If you prefer to extend the trip, you can hike to Karihaugen and Anaripigg, or Kluftåthaugen and the Fugleskjelle mountains.
- Make sure you also bring matches or a lighter and a frying pan to cook the fish you’ll catch.
- In the late summer and early autumn, bring a bucket for collecting all the blueberries you will see on the trip.
- The Putten Seter Cafe
- Toilets (for guests of the cafe or cottages)
Where to stay
Putten Seter is located in Høvringen on the south side of the mountain and is the starting point for the hike. The mountain lodge offers an abundance of cottages, cabins, and rooms to rent. It also runs Høvringen Hostel.
