Hike Senja’s highest mountain peak
- Destination: Senja
- Season: June–September
- Difficulty: Expert
- Distance: 7.3 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 980 meters
- Duration: 4–6 hours
Due to the difficulty of this trail, which includes some climbing and exposure along the ridge towards the top, avoid this adventure unless you’re an experienced hiker and do not have a fear of heights.
With Breidtinden’s altitude, the top can often be clouded over, so check the weather forecast before setting out. Do not hike the trail in bad weather.
The area around Breitindvatnet lake is well suited for camping, perfect for an early morning attack on the peak.
The trailhead starts from the side of the road between Senjahopen and Mefjordbotn. There is a small parking lot on the ocean side and the trail starts about 25 meters along the road towards Senjahopen.
The trail is easy and well-marked all the way up past Svartholvatnet lake to Breitindvatnet lake.
After passing the lake, the trail starts to become considerably steeper. As you gain in altitude, you quickly reach more difficult sections.
Follow the trail along the ridge all the way up to the top. There is some climbing required, with narrow and slippery sections. Do not go too far to the right as this leads to a peak 50 meters below the main peak. The top of Breidtinden is rather small, but it has room for about 10 people.
Enjoy the panoramic views before descending along the same trail.
- Water is available along the route
