Hoven is a stand-alone mountain located on Gimsøya, the island located between Vestvågøya and Austvågøya. This island, aside for Hoven, is very flat and full of wetland area but the coastline is exquisite with snow-white sand beaches.
The trailhead for Hoven is located right beside the infamous Lofoten Links, one of the world's most northern golf courses, and climbs up the northeastern ridge of the mountain to the 368-meter tall peak. The hike provides incredible views of the surrounding ocean and landscape, and at the top provides 360 degree views. You will be able to see Vestvågøya to the south and Austvågøya to the northeast and in the distance to the north, you can catch a glimpse of Vesterålen on mainland Norway.
From Svolvær airport, it is 45 kilometers to Hov, where you will find the parking lot next to Lofoten Links golf course. From the Svolvær airport, follow E10 south, towards "Svolvær" and then towards "Å i Lofoten", for about 35 kilometers. Turn right onto Fv 861 and stay on this road for about 6 kilometers. Turn left onto Fv862 and follow this for the final 3 kilometers until you come to Lofoten Links on your left. Park in the upper parking lot and you will see the trailhead located next to the parking spaces.
From Leknes Airport, follow E10 north towards Svolvær for 37 kilometers. Turn left onto Fv 861 and stay on this road for about 6 kilometers. Turn left onto Fv862 and follow this for the final 3 kilometers until you come to Lofoten Links on your left. Park in the upper parking lot and you will see the trailhead located next to the parking spaces.
The trailhead is located next to the upper parking lot at Lofoten Links golf course. You will see a sign pointing towards "Hoven". The first few hundred meters will take you next to a few of the golf holes until it directs you towards the beginning of the hike at the base of the mountain.
Note: The beginning of the hike tends to be quite wet so be prepared with the appropriate shoes to ensure your feet will be dry and feeling great for the rest of the hike.
The hike will follow the northeastern ridge to the top of Hoven. There are many places to stop for a rest as well as great photo opportunities of the Norwegian Sea, the snow-white sandy beaches, and the idyllic golf course nestled along the coast. There are a few points along the trail that are quite steep but overall, the trail is well-tracked and you will be able to find solid footing along the hike.
The Lofoten Links, a full 18-hole golf course, has a restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also restrooms available.
