There is no better way to get acquainted with Tromsø than to head up to Fløya for a bird's eye view of the city. Fløya, the eastern mountain rising 671 meters above the ocean, is a popular location for both a great adventure and to gain a better perspective of Norway's Arctic city. From the top of Fløya, you are witnessing the panoramic view above Tromsø, the surrounding ocean, and the hundreds of small and large Norwegian islands scattered throughout the area.
There are many paths up to Fløya but the one we propose takes you through the beautiful forest on a friendly incline and winds its way up to the first lookout point at Storsteinen, where the historic cable car arrives, and then takes you further up the hill past Steinbøhytta to the peak.
Enjoy a meal at Fjellstua, take the cable car ride back down the mountain, or enjoy a casual hike down an alternate route which goes through the neighborhood situated below.
From Tromsø, you can drive, take a bus, or even walk over the bridge to Tromsdalen, where you will find the trailhead to Fløya.
Head out of Tromsø on Rv862/Bruvegen towards E8 and Tromsdalen. After crossing the bridge, you will see the Arctic Cathedral ahead. Take the road on the southside of the cathedral called "Turistvegen". Follow this road for a few blocks until you come to a grocery store on your right. Take the first right turn after this grocery on Aton Jakobsberg veg. Stay on this road for 500 meters and take a left. You will then see the bottom of the cable car. Parking is available here for both hikers and cable car riders. There is a large area for parking below the cable car and the trailhead to hike to Fløya is located right next to the cable car terminal.
From Tromsø, take bus number 26 toward Pyramiden to the "Novasenteret" stop. Follow Møllervegen to Anton Jakobsberg veg and take a left. After about 100 meters, take a righthand turn and you will the cable car terminal ahead.
Walk east across the bridge, Bruvegen, from Tromsø to Tromsdalen. After crossing the bridge, you will see the Arctic Cathedral ahead. Take the road on the southside of the cathedral called "Turistvegen". Follow this road for a few blocks until you come to a grocery store on your right. Take the first right turn after this grocery store onto Aton Jakobsberg veg. Stay on this road for 500 meters and take a left. You will then see the bottom of the cable car.
The trailhead is located on the southside of the cable car terminal. The trail will head south and away from the cable car track, into the forest on a gentle uphill slope. The trail will head in this direction for about 2 kilometers before it makes a gradual left hand turn up the hill to the north. About another 2 kilometers until you reach the top of the cable car track, Fjellheisen. Here there is a restaurant and a great place to soak in the view.
To continue to the top of Fløya, you will head up the hill away from the cable car terminal for another 1.5 kilometers. As you wind your way to the top, you will pass a cabin by the name of "Steinbøhytta". The last few hundred meters take you on a straight shot to the top of the peak.
Fjellstua, located at the top of the cable car, is a fully functioning restaurant and cafe serving lunch and dinner.
There are bathrooms available at the Fjellstua as well.
