About Seltun to Lærdalsøyri
This hike takes you through the lush Lærdal valley along the river down to the fjord. Lærdal river is one of the most famous salmon fishing lakes in Norway and at Seltun gard there is a good chance you could see salmon swimming upstream in the river.
Lærdal is known for the vegetable gardens. The steep hill sides turns into wide flood plains as you are walking from Saltkjelen to Rikheim. If you are hiking late August or September you can buy apples or plums on your way to Lærdalsøyri.
Lærdalsøyri is an old trading place at the end of the Sognefjord. Walk through the streets and see the wooden houses built 100 to 300 years ago. Lærdal was once a lively fishing village with lots of boats along the quay. Third weekend in June Lærdal turns into a lively market, a week of sales stalls and entertainment. If you want to learn more about Lærdal river you should visit Norwegian Villaks Center.
There are a lot of bus stops along the hiking route between Vang and Lærdalsøyri available since E16 is parallel with Kongevegen and not far away. If you are running out of time or you decide to travel to another part of Kongevegen, check out these buses or taxis.

Parking: There are many places with free parking along the route. At Borlaug, Borgund, Sjurhaugfossen and Seltun, there is room for some cars. In Lærdal town center you must pay for parking.
The hiking route from Seltun to Lærdalsøyri consists of grass and gravel trails, gravel roads and paved roads. Start at Seltun and walk along the river towards Bjørkum. At Bjørkum you cross the river and turn right towards Hønjum and walk through fields and groves to Saltkjelen.
Until now the valley has been dominated by steep hillsides close to the river, but at Saltkjelen the valley turns into wide and lush floodplains as you approach Rikheim where you walk past rich vegetable gardens.
From Rikheim hike along county road 272 until you are 1 km from Tønjum. take a righthand turn and follow the narrow trail along a field towards Voll bridge. Cross the river and hike on county road 271 to Lærdal hospital. The route through Lærdalsøyri is on the streets Sviggum, Sekleppvegen, Brattegjerde, Øyramarki and Øyragata to the harbor.
If you are staying at Seltun gard, we would recommend staying for an extra day and do the round trip to Seltunåsen. You could also book a guided tour along the river at Seltun Gard.

- Seltun to Lærdalsøyri: 20 km (6 hours)
- Borgund camping to Tønjum: 22 km (8 hours)
- 90% on asphalt. Flat.
Free parking everywhere, but not in Lærdalsøyri.
