Östmark, with its large and beautiful church, was once one of the most important Finnskogen villages. 6,000 inhabitants lived here, but 2500 of them emigrated to America. An archive of the great emigration is established here, and many descendants of emigrants from Finnskogen come here to retrieve information about their ancestors.
In Östmark you will also find a very special cafe, Memphis Cafe, established in honor of Elvis Presley!
Östmark church is one of the most distinctive churches in Finnskogen. It was built in 1765 and is largely unchanged from that time. Outside the church stands a memorial stone for the missionary Anna Johansson Valkoinen, who was stoned to death by a crowd in the mission field in China in 1900. There is also a memorial stone for tradition bearer Kaisa Vilhuinen.
