Melen Hiking Trail
Hike with an airy surprise
- Destination: Sunnmøre
- Season: May–October
- Difficulty: Medium
- Distance: 4.5 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 510 meters
- Duration: 2–3 hours
Melen is a mountain with some surprises. From the trailhead in the south, it looks easy and safe to climb all the way to the summit. But as you get closer to the top you will see the steep north ridge.
Most hikers will end their hike before entering the north ridge but if you are a bit more daring you can carry on. Note that this will increase the length of the trip, and change the difficulty to demanding. Scrambling is required, it's airy and sometimes exposed.
From Ålesund stay on road E136. At Digerneset, follow the signs towards Skodje/Brattvåg on road 661. Continue on road 661 to Vatne.
In Vatne drive straight ahead onto road 147. Do not turn left in the direction of Vestnes on road 661. After 9 kilometers you will see Melen, and a large parking on the right side of the road.
The trailhead is on the left side of the parking.
Stay on the trail until you reach a river. Here the trail will split. Choose the trail going to the left, crossing the river, and continue to the summit.
If you wish to explore the ridge, there is a trail most of the way. You also have the option to walk on the side of the ridge a few places.
- You can fill up your water bottle when crossing the river
