About Vivelid and Storesåta

The drive up into the picturesque Hjølmadalen Valley gives a sample of the scenery that awaits further into the valley which stretches to the edge of Hardangervidda National Park. From the end of the road a trail leads towards Vivelid tourist cabin before looping back over a plateau with magnificent views back down the valley. Visit for the day or spend a night at the cabin for a cosy Hardangervidda experience.

Getting there

The trailhead is located at the end of Hjølmavegen Road in the Hjølmadalen Valley, 10.5 kilometers from Øvre Eidfjord and Norwegian Scenic Route Hardangervidda.

At the end of the road is a parking lot.

Trail description

This route is a lollipop shape with the same trail at the beginning and end, combined with a loop that reaches into Hardangervidda National Park.

Follow the marked trail south to Vivelid. You can choose to cross the bridge and pay a visit to the Vivelid cabin for a break, or continue. Now inside the national park, the trail leads southeast, meeting the fork to Hedlo.

Bear left at the fork, and start the uphill hike to the plateau to the east. On the plateau, cross the bridge over the creek and bear left at the fork to Liseth. As you continue over Storesåta you will find fabulous views over the surrounding landscape.

Descend back down to the trail you took towards Vivelid, and follow it back to the parking lot.

If you wish to extend this hike and take in the Valurfossen Waterfall, you can take a slightly different route at the beginning. Note that this extra trail is unmarked in parts, but has the benefit of cutting off a lot of the “stick” of the lollipop route and turns the hike into more of a loop.

  • Free parking

Where to stay

Vivelid fjellstova, located about one hour into the hike, is a full-service tourist cabin open in the summertime.
