About Saksa

Saksa is a mountain in the Sunnmøre Alps. It's located in Hjørundfjorden, and offers a great view of fjord and the mountains around it.

In recent years the trail has been improved by sherpas. This has made the trip easier, and Saksa is now one of the most popular hikes in the area.

This hike will take you to the southern peak, where most hikers stop. But the north peak is actually the highest point.

Getting there

From Ålesund drive towards Sykkylven on road 60. Take the ferry between Magerholm and Sykkylven. After the ferry stay on road 60. You will drive pass Stranda and Hellesylt.

Turn right onto road 655 towards Øye, and continue through the beautiful Norangsdalen. In Urke turn right just after you pass the bridge and Urke camping. Parking is just 100 meters ahead.

You can also go to Urke from Ørsta. Take the ferry from Sæbø to Leksnes.

Trail description

From the parking lot, you will see a sign showing you the way towards Saksa. After a short walk, turn right onto the gravel road. Follow the road until you see a new sign to your left.

The trail in the forest is steep. After 300 vertical meters you will get to a viewing point. A nice place to rest and to have a snack. Continue along the trail. You will soon get above the forest, where you can see Saksa clearly.

In the last part of the trail, you have a few spots where it's easy scrambling. But the stairs made of stone makes most of the hike easy.

  • No running water. Bring enough to drink.

  • Parking costs 30 NOK and can only be payed with coins.

Where to stay

  • Urke Camping is located just across the river.
  • Hotel Union Øye is a historic hotel from 1891. Even if you're not staying, it's worth a visit. Take a look at the rooms, and perhaps taste some apple pie.
