The family-friendly adventure from Rjukan to Hardangervidda. Soak in the incredible views of Gaustatoppen, the tallest mountain in southern Norway, and the surrounding beautiful plateau.
From Oslo, take road E18 southwest for 42 kilometers until you reach Drammen, where you take the exit for road E134 west towards Haugesund and Kongsberg. Stay on road E134 for 40 kilometers until you reach Kongsberg where you follow signs for road 40 and road 37. Stay on road 40 for 5 kilometers until taking a left onto road 37, towards Rjukan. Stay on road 37 for 90 kilometers until you arrive in Rjukan.
Drive through the town of Rjukan and follow signs towards "Krossobanen", on the righthand side. Park your car in the designated parking area and either take the cable car or hike to the top of the mountain, where the Solstien trail begins.
The Solstien trail begins next to the top of the Krossobanen cable car. Follow the gravel road west for nearly a kilometer. When you reach a parking area, walk to the western point where the stone steps of the trail begin. The steps will take you to a fantastic lookout point at 1110 meters above sea level. At the top, you will see remains of a German cannon emplacement from World War II and incredible views of Hardangervidda to the north and Gaustatoppen to the southeast.
You can either follow the same trail back or the gravel road east and then south, back to the cable car station. If you choose the latter route, take a quick trip up to the top of Piggnatten, just northwest, which adds an additional kilometer to the whole journey.
- You can either hike or take the Krossobanen cable car to the top of the mountain, where the hike begins. Prices and opening hours for the cable car can be found here.
- There is a restaurant located next to the top of the cable car.
