About Bjørnhaugmyra's orchids
A trip to Bjørnhaugmyra makes a lovely summer hike to see our beautiful wild Norwegian orchids when they are in full bloom. Bjørnhaugmyra is a large old semi-natural grassland, a threatened habitat type in Norway. Several of our Norwegian orchids can be found at Bjørnhaugmyra. If you visit the grassland in early July, you will be able to see these orchids in full bloom. The traditional harvesting of these grasslands ceased around a century ago in most of Norway. But semi-natural mires can recover, even after being abandoned for so long, due to the moist conditions. Regular cutting and clearing of the vegetation in these habitat types allows old semi-natural grasslands to achieve the same diversity of orchid species that existed before.
The Dokkadelta National Wetland Centre holds an annual orchid safari on Bjørnhaugmyra.
Getting there
Bjørnhaugmyra is located in Saltstutlia in Nord-Torpa. If you are driving from Dokka follow rv250 Lillehammervegen and turn left onto Skartlivegen. After this follow the road until you reach a toll barrier on the right-hand side. You can park your car here (making sure you do not block the road) and continue by foot up to the marsh. The walk is approximately 1-2km.
