About Kjerring River
Take a family-friendly hike along the Kjerring River near Grotli. The trail leads through thick woods before entering open terrain and passing a small waterfall with views. Beyond the falls, explore the ponds and enjoy a picnic on the mountain plateau.
Getting there
The Kjerring River trailhead is located 4.5 kilometers west of Grotli, between the endpoints for Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen and Norwegian Scenic Route Gamle Strynefjellsvegen.
Turn off Road 15 at Grotli Høyfjellshotell and onto the gravel Gamle Geirangerveg Road which runs parallel to Road 15. Follow this road for about 2 kilometers until you reach the bridge over the Kjerring River. Park by the roadside.
Trail description
The trailhead is about 80 meters west of the bridge.
The trail ascends gradually through the woods, following the river upstream. It doesn’t take too long until you pass the treeline.
You will come to Kjerringfossen Waterfall, with a nice view back down to Breiddalsvatnet Lake. Continue on and stop at Kjerringtjønn, a large pond on the plateau, to enjoy the scenery before heading back down.
