Melen Mountain Biking
Flowy and technical trails
- Season: April-November
- Difficulty: Expert
- Distance: 15.2 kilometers (loop)
- Elevation Gain: 1,080 meters
- Duration: 4.5-7 hours
Melen is on of many mountains along the Atlantic Ocean Road . The peak is 768 m above sea level and Sjurvarden is a hundred meters lower; 667 moh, giving you flowy trails all the way from Melen. The trail is demanding and somewhat technical, but you will be rewarded with spectacular views.
From Farstad: Follow road 663 north towards Brenslestien. After about 5 km turn right and follow the signs to the shooting range.
From Averøy or Eide: Head north on road 64 until you reach Vevang, make a left and continue for about 5 km. Follow the signs to the shooting range.
Pass the range and you will end up at the trail head at Skotten.
The trail heads towards Skottenvatnet on a tractor road. At first it is steep and rocky, so the easiest way is to roll the bike. When you get to the water follow the left side. Once you have passed the airy ridge, you have Melen on your left hand and Sjursvarden on the right side. At the top right is Stemhesten. The whole plateau is great to ride on, but one should stick to the path. Once you reach Melen, you have an awesome ride down Sjurvaren. From Sjurvarden, head back to Skottenvarden. You can either follow the same road as you came up or you can ride down to Rødalen. The beginning of the trail down the Rødalen is rocky, but will eventually end up in a forest trail.
