From Åndalsnes to the viewpoint at the top of Trollstigen
- Season: June-August
Trollstigen is a must see. The mountain road snakes its way up steep mountainsides and passes powerful waterfalls. The sharp hairpin turns connect Åndalsnes with Valldalen and Geiranger. Be sure to stop at the viewing platforms at the top to snap some pictures and take it all in.
The road opened in 1936 and is a testimony to superb engineering and construction skills using the simplest of tools from the hard thirties.
The area’s unique natural surroundings were created during a succession of ice ages, when glaciers carved out deep fjords and shaped the high mountains – it is not a coincidence that Geirangerfjorden today often appears on lists of the most spectacular places in the world.
There is a cafe, washrooms and a gift shop at the top of Trollstigen. Park your car and walk out to the farthest point of the viewpoint to get the best impression of this magnificent place.
