About The Stonebridge over Føysa river
This cultural trail takes you from Billingen Seterpensjonat through a forested landscape up to the tree line, across Føysa River via Føysstein Stonebridge, before leading you downhill and back to Billingen. Enjoy the far-reaching views of Reinheimen and Breheimen National Parks and Honnsrøve Nature Reserve as you cross the tree line.
Learn about the mountain farm culture in Skjåk, and the unique features of the landscape from the informational boards along the route. Large mountain pine trees and a rare type of yellowish lichen are among the things you’ll discover.
Føysstein Stonebridge was created at the end of the Last Glacial Period, about 10,000 years ago, when it was carried alongside large masses of ice to its present location. When the ice melted, the boulder remained, forming a natural bridge utilized by humans and animals alike. According to local folk legends, however, the bridge was made by trolls and named after the ogress Føyse. She needed to cross the river to get home to her troll husband, Tore, who lived far west in the Tordalsfjella Mountains. He threw the large rock across the canyon so his wife could pass the river safely.
Getting there
Car
Billingen is located 47 kilometers west of Lom, along Road 15. Having driven 18.9 kilometers west of Dønfoss, you’ll cross a bridge. Just after the bridge, turn off Road 15 to the right.
Park your car in the parking area to the right of the Tora River. You’ll see Billingen Seterpensjonat, informational boards about Reinheimen National Park, and signs to “Steinbrua” (the stone bridge) on the east side of the bridge (on the opposite side of the river from the parking).
Bus
The express bus VY146 running between Oslo and Måløy stops at Billingen. Use VY Bus Express travel planner to find departures and book tickets.
From the bus stop, you’ll easily spot the parking for the trailhead.
Trail description
If wishing a longer hike, take the red-marked trail to the right at the fork before the stone bridge. This path takes you to Føystjønn Lake (1,320 m.a.s.l.), traveling uphill along the eastern side of Føysa River. It’s about 3.5 kilometers from the fork to the lake.
