About Øye to Tyinkrysset

The historic road between Øye and Tyinkrysset starts at the end of the Vangsmjøsa lake by the Øye Stave Church. The trail is mainly grass and gravel and takes you from wooded inland countryside to the open mountain scenery on the Filefjell plateau.

Getting there

Public transport

If you are staying at Sørre Hemsing or Bøflaten camping, you can take the local bus to Øye which departs every day in the morning. Check the timetable to plan your journey.

There are a lot of bus stops along the hiking route between Vang and Lærdal due to E16 running parallel to Kongevegen.

Trail description

From Øye Stave Church, follow E16 for 1.4 kilometers before turning left onto the historic road marked by an obvious sign. The road goes up and down in gentle slopes towards Varpe bridge. Just before the Kølabrune bridge, there is a steep climb until the terrain flattens out towards Tyinkrysset. Turn left onto Grøvstølvegen and finish the hike at Filefjellstuene, where you can stay the night and enjoy great local food.

This section of Kongevegen has several good examples of the French style of road construction, where the road heads straight as long as possible despite the hilly terrain. The steep hills were once impossible for horses with a cart to pass without several breaks.

Starting point: Øye Stave Church
End-point: Filefjellstuene or Kyrkjestølen
The trail is mostly grass or gravel and asphalt for 1.4 kilometers from Øye stave church until the trailhead.
