Vettakollen is a peak located between Holmenkollen and Sognsvann, just on the northern edge of the city, providing some of the best panoramic views of Oslo.
A round trip hike to the top of Vettakollen from the nearest T-bane stop can be done in about an hour and is quite accessible for hikers of all skill levels. The trail is a wide and well-maintained rocky path and it is recommended to wear the appropriate hiking shoes.
From downtown Oslo, jump on the westbound T-bane line 1 (Frognerseteren) to the Vettakollen stop, the 9th stop after Majorstuen. It takes about 20 minutes from downtown to the start of the hike -- it does not get much easier than that!
Once off the T-bane, head up the hill along the residential street “Huldreveien” for about 100 meters and take a right turn at the street named “Gulleråsveien”. Follow the road as it curls around to the right for about 50 meters and you will see quite a steep street called “Båntjernveien” on your left. Head up this road and at the top, you will find the start of the rocky trail into the forest. Immediately you leave the neighborhood and head into Nordmarka, Oslo’s “backyard”.
The rocky trail you find at the end of Båntjernveien will connect you to a larger road-like trail that heads uphill to the left. Only a few meters further and you will come to another fork in the road with a trail sign. Stay left at this point and walk a few more meters, again keeping to your left and head up the rocky trail. One final fork will arrive shortly. Make sure to stay to your right to follow the trail which is relatively wide and rocky with a gradual incline. This trail will provide views of Frognerseteren on your left and the Oslo city center on your right as you follow the trail up the hill.
After 20-30 minutes of hiking at an easy pace, you will arrive at the open area with a viewpoint providing the most sprawling panorama of the Oslo city, surrounding neighborhoods, fjord, and forest. There is plenty of space at the top to relax and soak in the sights - and even some room to pop-up a tent for an overnight stay. The trail does continue deeper into the forest from this point with well-detailed signs which direct you towards Sognsvann Lake or Frognerseteren and many more options - so the hiking possibilities are endless from this trailhead.
- Vettakollen is an awesome place to experience a sunrise or sunset in Oslo but keep in mind that the trail can be a little difficult in the dark. So bring a flashlight or headlamp for those early morning or late night treks.
- Because this quick hike is so close to the city, grab your colleagues and friends for a great after-work trip.
