About Nevlunghavn to Vestre Bramskjæra

Weather conditions can change rapidly in this area, and can present difficulties for paddlers. Be cautious and always pay attention to the weather reports prior to heading out on the water. On a beautiful day the Bramskjæra islands are amazing to explore, but in rougher conditions this route is better-suited for skilled paddlers and windsurfing.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Nevlunghavn.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 132 kilometers until you reach exit toward Fv 303 Larvik. Follow signs towards Fv302 - Helgeroa. Stay on Fv302/Brunlanesveien for nearly 15 kilometers until you reach Nevlunghavn.

Trail description

From Nevlunghavn, paddle east and then southeast along the shoreline towards Smørvika. On the peninsula, Styggås, lies a geological masterpiece, and worth a trip ashore. From Smørvika, cross to Østre Bramskjær island. The Bramskjær islands are full of beautiful small islands, islets, and narrow canals. There are great places to land on Vestre Bramskjær: a sandy beach in the northeast and in the middle of the bay on the south side. On land, you will find great places to enjoy a break as well as pitch a tent if you would like to stay the night.

Between Østre and Vestre Bramskjær islands, you can paddle through the small islets and explore the area before taking a break on Vestre Bramskjær. Continue paddling west, back to the mainland, and north along the shoreline. We recommend paddling around the harbor of Nevlunghavn before completing the journey.

Alternate route
On the trip out, you paddle south across to the Bramskjær islands rather than paddling out to Smørvika bay. The return can be along the southern side of the canal, and down to Oddane peninsula before returning to Nevlunghavn. Be aware of larger waves near the harbor in Havnebukta.

Another alternative for experienced kayakers is paddling to the bay west of Oddane peninsula, between Oddane Sand beach and Mølen peninsula, in the Saltstein area. This area is popular for kayakers who like big waves. The area is very exposed. For those who want to play in smaller surf waves, these can often be found between the small islets southwest of the Bramskær islands.

At Nevlunghavn you can find:

  • Public restrooms
  • Parking
  • Fresh water
