About Risøya to Stavernsøya
Although a short tour, you will get to experience this historic shipyard town from the water as well as exploring the beautiful marine landscape surrounding Stavern.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 132 kilometers until you reach exit toward Fv 303 Larvik. Follow signs towards Fv301 - Stavern. Stay on Fv301/Stavernveien for 6.4 kilometers until you turn left onto the road, Risøyveien. Follow Risøyveien until you reach your destination.
From Risøya, the route heads south along the shoreline and takes you to Festningshamna bay, on the northern edge of Stavern island, east of Citadell Island. A trip into Stavern Bay is highly recommended.
There are many great opportunities for lodging on Stavern island, either in tents or in the coastal cabin “Stavernsodden fyr”. Citadell Island, Stavern island, and Torkel island are three connected islands. Here you will find great opportunities for going on land to explore the cultural and historical surroundings on foot. Return along the same route to Risøya.
For more experienced kayakers it is possible to go around Stavern island to the west. The stretch around Stavern island in the east and south is exposed to wind and weather. Also be aware of the shipping traffic heading to-and-from the Larvik port in the north.
There is also the opportunity to paddle from Stavern further south and follow the coast to Rakke. Here, you will find a coastal cabin. Please note that Rakke is a very exposed area and notorious for difficult wave conditions. Landing can be difficult.
At Risøya you can find:
- Public restrooms
- Fresh water
