About Bjønnes to Malmøya
Malmøya is located on the very outside of Viksfjorden and is an island with a diverse landscape. It is certainly a place every paddler should visit, either as a day trip or for an overnight stay.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 123 kilometers until you reach exit 44-Ringdalkrysset. Continue onto Hedrum Ravei until turning left onto Gamle Ravei. Stay on this road for 1.8 kilometers. Turn left onto Verningenveien and then continue straight onto Håkestadveien for 4.8 kilometers. Turn right onto Tjøllingveien/Fv303 for a half kilometer. Turn left onto Husebyveien and follow the road for 1.7 kilometers before turning left onto Østbyveien which will take you to your destination at Bjønnes.
From Bjønnes, paddle southwest, following the shoreline until you reach where the fjord opens up. From here, paddle south, across to Langøya island and then west along the northern shoreline to the idyllic Malmøya island.
On Malmøya island, it is nice to land on the beach on the north-western coast. There are several nice picnic areas, camping areas, and great access to hiking trails to Flaskebukta bay and Nepegårdsbukta bay in the south. Here you will also find the coastal cabin, "Jakthytta", which is available to rent.
On the return trip, paddle north across the fjord to Larvikslandet. From here, paddle northeast, following the coastline back to Bjønnes.
An great alternate route is to paddle around Malmøya island. Experience the magnificent Flaskebukta bay, a lagoon with narrow inlets, on the island's southern side. Explore the amazing rock formations on the western and southern sides of the island.
Malmøya island is facing both the sea and Viksfjord, so it is an exposed area and can be difficult to land on if the weather is rough.
At Bjønnes you can find:
- Public restrooms
- Public parking
- Fresh water
- Summertime kiosk
