About Ølbergholmen to Malmøya

In the outer perimeter of Viksfjorden, there are many small islets, and the biggest one, Malmøya, is definitely worth a visit. A great route in sheltered waters, with many possible variations.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Ølbergholmen.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 117 kilometers until you reach exit 42 toward Fv 305 Sandefjord. Follow Fv305 to Fv303 through Sandefjord and follow signs to Larvik. Stay on Fv303 for nearly 8.2 kilometers until you turn left onto the road, Ulaveien. Stay on Ulaveien for 2.7 kilometers until turning right onto the road, Eftangveien. Stay on Eftangveien for 4.4 kilometers until reaching the parking lot just south of Rønningen Camping.

Trail description

From Ølbergholmen, paddle west around the point and head south to the end of Ølbergholmen. Here, we recommend landing to experience this amazing place by foot. Furthermore, the trip crosses over to Hoppøya's eastern shoreline, and further between the smaller islets. After almost two kilometers you reach the northern tip of Malmøya. Paddle west along the northern shoreline for a few kilometers. Along the shoreline, you will find many different places to land and explore. You will find nice hiking trails, including one to Flaskebukta bay and Nepegårdbukta bay, found on the southern edge of the island.

The return route to Ølbergholmen takes you around the northern edge of Malmøya and over to the northern edge of Langøya island. Paddle around Langøya island and then crossing east to the mainland. Paddle south along the shoreline until you return to Ølbergholmen.

We recommend staying overnight on Malmøya island in either a tent or in the coastal cabin, "Jakthytta".

Alternate route
If weather permits and you want a kayaking trip through more open water, you can paddle from Ølbergholmen to south side of Hoppøya island and then head north along Malmøya’s eastern coastline.
