- Elevation Gain: 1,440 meters
- Duration: 6-8 hours
A hike up to Helgelandsbukken Mountain will give you some of the best views possible of the Helgeland Coast and Svartisen, Norway’s second largest glacier. The hike includes a boat trip across the Holandsfjord, where you can enjoy the view of the crystalline blue Engabreen Glacier coming down between the mighty mountains. This branch of Svartisen is Europe’s lowest-lying glacier, with its lowest point located only a hundred meters above sea level.
Make sure to wear good hiking boots as the trail gets very slippery in rainy conditions.
The trip starts from the parking lot at Holandsvika, located along Road 17 between Halsa and Glomfjord. The parking lot is fairly small, just by the pier.
Take the ferry across the Holandsfjord to Svartisen farm. The trip takes about 15 minutes. When disembarking the ferry, you’ll see the gravel road that takes you along Svartisen Lake. The road is about 3 kilometers long and ends at the opposite side of the lake.
From the end of the road, follow the trail up to the DNT cabin Tåkeheimen. As you hike further up, you’ll get a better view of Engabreen behind you. The trail is easy to find and follow.
As you move upwards, there’ll be less and less vegetation. The cabin is situated above the treeline, some 1,100 meters above sea level.
There’s a small trail from Tåkeheimen leading to the hillside. Take care as you descend this rocky hillside. You should be able to see cairns as you make your way up towards the peak. There’s a plateau some 1,270 meters above sea level, where you can stop and enjoy the view.
There’s no marked trail from the plateau up to the peak. Look for the big cairn at the top. Once at the top, you’ll have views of the Helgeland Coast, Svartisen, as well as nearby peaks and distant mountain ranges.
You can find the schedule for the boat at engenbreenskyss.no
The round-trip fare on the ferry is NOK 200 for adults and NOK 100 for children (10-16 years)
Tåkeheimen is a no-service DNT cabin. If you’re planning on staying overnight, you’ll need to bring a sleeping bag and food. The cabin is always open, but you have to pay for staying overnight. Prices depend on age
