About Bogen to Melsomvik
It is exciting to check out the coastal cabins, meadows, and beautiful forest areas from the kayak. On this tour, you will experience everything, and is a perfect route for beginners.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 107 kilometers until you reach exit 39 for Fv 303 towards Stokke. Drive through Stokke and continue on Fv303/Kirkeveien towards Sandefjord for another 5.2 kilometers. Take a left onto Bogenveien and your destination will be about 500 meters ahead.
The route heads north along the western shoreline of Ravnø island. When you pass Maroniodden peninsula, you will be surrounded by a lot of coastal cabins, private piers, and public marinas.
On the western side of Gåsø island, it becomes more rural again and after about three kilometers you pass Vårnes, on the mainland. Here, there is a small beach next to a pier, which is a great place to take a break. Follow the mainland side further north. You will pass the boats at Solnes marina and the nearby grain silos. Melsomvik Kornsilo is Vestfold’s largest grain producer. Here there can be bigger boats, but always count on some other small boat traffic in the area.
Be prepared for some waves which are ricocheting from the docks in the marina. Further into Melsombukta bay, there is a harbor. On the east side of the bay, lies the popular beach of Sandbånn, which is a perfect place to stop and stretch your legs. The route continues along the shoreline towards Trælsodden peninsula in the southeast. From there, paddle south about 700 meters to Gåsøkalven island, which has great places on the western side to land your kayak.
About 200 meters further south is Gåsø island. There is the recreational area and several nice places to enjoy a break from the water on the north and west sides of the island. Furthermore, paddle south to Ravnø island. On the southern end of Ravnø, there is a amazing beach located between the boat docks. From here, paddle west back to the mainland and follow the shoreline south back to Bogen.
Make the trip shorter by paddling north to Gåsøkalven island. Take a break there and return to Bogen via Gåsø and Ravno islands.
