About Kløvningen Island
In nice weather, this is a short and perfect route to a beautiful place. Even though the difficulty level is deemed easy, the trip can be more demanding when it is windy.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 96 kilometers until you reach exit 35-Gullikrysset for Rv308 toward Tønsberg/Nøtterøy/Tjøme. Follow Fv308 for 25.5 kilometers until turning left onto Ormeletveien. Stay on this road for 6 kilometers over Brøtsø island and onto Hvasser island. Turn right on Oppegårdsveien and follow the road for 1.5 kilometers until you arrive at Krøkle.
From Krøkle the route takes you straight south to the island Kløvningen. It has a lagoon in the northern coast with a nice beach and great places to pitch a tent. On the southern side of Kløvningen, you will have clear views of the open ocean and you will also be able to see Færder lighthouse in the southeast.
The trip can be demanding in windy weather, but it's only one kilometer to the lagoon on the northeast side. The return route to Krøkle takes you via the southwestern edge of Hvasser island. From there, paddle due east along the shoreline until you return to your starting point. Be aware of boat traffic at all times.
In good weather, a trip around the whole island of Kløvningen can be exciting and challenging. There are only a few places where it is easy to land the kayak but there is a nice sandy beach on the southeastern side with perfect camping opportunities. It is also recommended to check out the coastal cabin, Tjønneberget, if you are planning an overnight stay.
