About Hvasser Loop

The classic route around the island of Hvasser offers an exciting and varied tour. The route offers everything from busy summer atmosphere to the beautiful nature of the fantastic archipelago.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Krøkle.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 96 kilometers until you reach exit 35-Gullikrysset for Rv308 toward Tønsberg/Nøtterøy/Tjøme. Follow Fv308 for 25.5 kilometers until turning left onto Ormeletveien. Stay on this road for 6 kilometers over Brøtsø island and onto Hvasser island. Turn right on Oppegårdsveien and follow the road for 1.5 kilometers until you arrive at Krøkle.

Trail description

From Krøkle, the route heads west, following the Hvasser coastline. Because of the small islets and windy weather, the beginning of the trip can be exposed to rougher waves but as soon as you turn north, the route takes you through more sheltered waters.

In summer, Røssesundet strait can be quite busy, especially on a nice weather day. Stay along the eastern side of the straight along the shoreline and you will avoid the higher speed traffic. When you are on the opposite side of the straight from Havna Hotell, head east and into the narrow straight taking you under Øra-brua bridge (county 380 which separates Brøtsø island in the north and Hvasser island in the south).

Paddle through the straight and head north. When safe, cross over to the northern point of Hvasser island. As you round the northern point, you reach Lilleskagen, a beautiful beach and a great place to take a break and even pitch a tent.

Further south lies the village of Krukehavn with a coastal cabin, fishery, shops, restaurants and galleries. It is often bustling with summer activity and worth a stop to check out the little town. There will be lots of boat traffic in this area so be aware of your surroundings. The best place to land your kayak is just north of the pier on the beach.

The last part of the trip is along more rocky shores and past private cabins. Stay along the shoreline until you return back to Krøkle.

Alternate route
Add an extra three kilometers to the route by paddling around the island of Vasskalven, just north of Hvasser.

At Krøkle you can find:

  • Public restrooms
  • Parking
