About Reinsafari på Filefjell
Until 1891 there were wild reindeer in the Vang Mountains. Then domesticated reindeers came and what was left of wild ones was incorporated into the domesticated reindeer herds. There are now two domesticated herds of reindeer in Vang. Fram tamreinlag and Filefjell reinlag. Fram tamreinlag has summer grazing on Filefjell east of Tyin and winter pastures in Øystre Slidre and Etnedal. Filefjell reinlag has summer pastures at Filefjell and winter pastures in the mountains in Hedalen. Reindeer are very robust and adapted to survive under extreme conditions in the mountains throughout the year. In winter, domesticated reindeer is often taken down into forest area.
In the summer there is a lot of reindeer in the Filefjell area. If you for example take the trip up from Tyin towards Steinbusjøen, chances are good that you will encounter small herd of reindeer. Although the reindeer are tame, do not expect to get too close. Try not to stress the animals by getting too close to them.
