About Steinbrygga to Bastøy
This is a great tour on quiet days. Crossing over to the island, Bastøy, can be demanding on days with wind and waves.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 88 kilometers until you reach exit 34 (Undrumsdal-Krysset) for Rv19/Rv306 toward E6/Havn/Moss/Horten/Rv311/Åsgårdstrand/Undrumsdal. Follow Rv19 for 5 kilometers before heading south on Kirkebakken/Rv325 for 500 meters. Take a left onto the road, Steinbrygga, and follow it until you come to the parking area at the boat harbor.
Follow along the shoreline north towards Horten and past the historic Viking town of Borre. You will then come to Langgrunn, a large man-made harbor with lots of facilities and a coastal cabin with the same name. It can be a bit difficult to land the kayaks here as it is quite shallow and somewhat rocky.
The route continues past the new sea rescue center before reaching the large area of Rørestrand and Rørestrand Camping. Feel free to take a break at Rørestrand before crossing over the strait to the island, Bastøy.
It is nice to land on Bastøykalven island, or on the beach on the north side of the Bastøy island. Large parts of island are closed to the public due to prison activities, but the area on the north side is open to the general public. Return back to Steinbrygga the same way.
At Steinbrygga you can find:
- Public toilets
- Fresh water
- Picning area
